許多專家在大選前擔心，蔡英文若當選總統，是否會恢復陳水扁執政時的「一邊一國」路線，但美媒卻認為蔡英文和陳水扁大不同。美國《華爾街日報》的專文指出，蔡英文的人格特質，與前總統陳水扁，有所不同。她行事謹慎，並承諾跟中國關係「不會有驚人之舉」，因而得到華盛頓方面的信賴。
《華爾街日報》19日一篇專文，名為「台灣大選結果，美國重估『一中』政策」（For U.S.,Taiwan Vote Changes Calculus Over“One China”），內容指出，一中框架等於扼殺台灣的國際生存空間；對美國而言，不論喜歡與否，台灣這次大選結果，都迫使華盛頓必須用新的角度，重新審視美中台三方共組的外交「政治方程式」。
專文指出，就像多數台灣人支持「維持現狀」一樣，蔡主張應該暫時擱置棘手的「獨立主張」。對台灣而言，中共企圖祭出「經濟制裁牌」，已經過時退潮；至於，「武力恫嚇牌」效用更低。多數觀察家認為，大陸國家主席習近平，內部有更急迫問題須處理，只要蔡不公開激怒中國，兩岸不致有衝突點發生。
